FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION (FPA)
A Fire Protection Association (FPA) is a local, community-based organisation, established under the National Veld and Forest Fire Act of 1998, to predict, prevent, manage, and extinguish veld and forest fires. These voluntary associations, formed by landowners like farmers and foresters, are a crucial part of the forestry and rural economy to protect lives, property, livestock, and natural resources from the significant threat of fires, which can cause widespread economic and environmental damage.
HOW AN FPA APPLIES FOR REGISTRATION
THE FIRST STEP is to complete and submit form 1, for DFFE's approval. The reason for this is that DFFE wants to ensure that, before FPAs spend the large amount of time and effort required to fill form 2, the four basic prerequisites for the formation of the FPA have been met: • the name of the FPA is unique; • the area of the FPA is appropriate (not too small, too large or overlapping with another FPA); • no other FPA exists within the same area; • and local government is aware of the formation of the FPA.
THE SECOND STEP is the completion and submission of form 2, along with the following documents: • the minutes of the founding meeting; • the FPA’s constitution and; • the FPA’s business plan, which includes its veldfire management strategy and rules.

ACTIVITIES INVOLVING TREES AND FORESTS
To apply for a tree license in South Africa, you must complete the relevant application form for protected trees or indigenous trees, or potentially an application for state forests, from the DFFE. You will need to attach supporting documents like a copy of your ID, a spatial map with GPS coordinates, and evidence of legal acquisition if dealing with imported wood. Submit the completed form and attachments to your nearest Forestry office within the DFFE. Determine if your activity involves a protected tree, an indigenous tree, or activity in a state forest and download the corresponding application.
