CLIMATE CHANGE AND AIR QUALITY (CCAQ)
Working to improve air and atmospheric quality and; to lead and support, inform, monitor and report efficient and effective international, national and significant provincial and local responses to climate change.
introduction
It is acknowledged that Africa, as a whole, has contributed least to GHG concentrations in the atmosphere, but faces some of worst consequences and generally has the least capacity to cope with climate change impacts. South Africa is a relatively significant contributor to global climate change with significant GHG emission levels from its energy intensive, fossil-fuel powered economy. On the other hand, our country is extremely vulnerable and exposed to impacts of climate change due to socio-economic and environmental context. South Africa is a water-stressed country and faces future drying trends and weather variability with cycles of droughts and sudden excessive rains. We have to urgently strengthen resilience of our society and economy to climate change impacts and develop and implement policies, measures, mechanisms and infrastructure that protect the most vulnerable.
FUNCTIONS
To identify, gather, sort, collate, store, archive, analyse, synthesize, distribute and popularise complete, accurate, and current climate change and climate change response data and information that ensures informed climate change response decision-making.
To lead and/or support, inform, monitor and report efficient and effective national, provincial and local climate change adaptation responses.
To prepare for, negotiate and inform the implementation of multi-lateral, mini-lateral and bilateral climate change agreements.
To ensure that reasonable legislative and other measures are developed, implemented and maintained in such a way as to protect and defend the right of all to air and atmospheric quality that is not harmful to health and well-being.

STRATEGY & FRAMEWORK
Meeting mitigation targets will require South Africa to implement a range of policies and measures. The DFFE develops legislative/regulatory framework which, apart from acts of Parliament and regulations; consists also of policies, norms and standards and other tools.
RESEARCH
South Africa's climate change response prioritises research, systemic observation, knowledge generation, information management and early warning systems that increase ability to measure and predict climate change and the implications of adverse effects.
FOCUS AREAS
A wide range of adaptation projects are being implemented in South Africa. Priority adaptation-related sectors for South Africa are: water, agriculture and commercial forestry, health, biodiversity and ecosystems, human settlements, and disaster risk reduction and management.
OUR PARTNERS
South Africa's international climate change commitments have resulted in many government sectors and departments, as well as private organisations and communities, implementing climate change adaptation and related projects in South Africa.
