2.2 ALOE FEROX HARVESTING, PROCESSING AND TRADING HUB
Aloe ferox plants in the Tyefu region of the Eastern Cape
Output 2.2 of the UNDP/GEF6 Project, implemented by DFFE, aims to develop an aloe ferox harvesting, processing and trading hub in the Eastern Cape for promoting sustainable and equitable benefit sharing across the value chain is supported.
Activities will establish plantations, a processing facility and an associated community enterprise. The output will be a community run enterprise and as such involves extensive community consultations towards establishing the required resources (both human and biological) for implementation as well as ensuring appropriate institutional arrangements are in place to manage the final enterprise. The Tyefu Community, harvesters and tappers form key stakeholders in this process.
Through the development of plantations and processing facility there will be continuous training of community members when and where they are needed. Furthermore as is required, equipment relevant to either the plantations or processing facilities will be procured throughout the timeframe.
Infrastructure associated with the plantations include field workshops (with the associated bulk services, storage space and amenities) and nurseries (establish layout, soil preparation, composting, fencing and construction).
The scale of processing facilities will be dependent on resources available (financial and temporal) but should meet objectives of providing testing, processing and packaging for aloe ferox products. Finally a project exit and sustainability strategy inclusive of the following will be developed:
- As part of the project exit strategy and sustainability strategy, partner agreements will be negotiated and submission of funding applications for co-financing support will be facilitated.
- The enterprise will finally be marketed as a regional Aloe ferox harvesting, processing and trading hub in the Eastern Cape to ensure linkages with the existing market and to support integration into established value chains.
