Nominations for SAWS Board members

Invitation for the nomination of suitable persons to be appointed as members to serve on the South African Weather Service Board

The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, hereby in terms of section 5(3) of the South African Weather Service Act, 2001 (Act No. 8 of 2001), invites members of the public to nominate suitable persons to be appointed as a member to serve on the South African Weather Services Board.

In terms of section 5(1) of the SAWS Act, members of the South African Weather Service Board must consist of:

  • the chief executive officer by virtue of his/her position;
  • a senior official of the department designated by the director-general, with the approval of the minister; and
  • no fewer than eight and no more than ten (10) other persons appointed on a part-time basis by the minister.

 

A nomination of a suitable person must include a curriculum vitae (CV) of the nominee which sets out the following:

  • personal details including full names, surname, race, gender and disability of the nominee;
  • postal and residential address, and contact number(s) of the nominee;
  • certified copies of all academic qualifications and other relevant documentation;
  • particulars of the nominee's experience and areas of expertise;
  • current and previous service on boards; and
  • names and contact details of at least two referees.

 

The nominee must have suitable experience or expertise in any of the following fields: strategic leadership and management; community development including subsistence farming; audit and risk; corporate governance; water resource management; air quality management; agriculture; the media, which may include radio, television and newspapers; disaster management; aviation; maritime; legal and insurance; any other weather sensitive industry or occupation; atmospheric science education and research; financial (chartered accountant), information technology and human resource management.

The members of the board will be appointed in their personal capacities and must broadly represent South African society. Members will serve on a part-time basis for a period of three years, effective from 1 January 2025 until 31 December 2027.

Confirmation of the availability of the nominee is also required. Preference will be given to candidates whose appointments will enhance representativity.

Members of the public are invited to submit to the minister, within 30 (thirty) days from the date of the publication of this notice in the newspaper, or in the Government Gazette, whichever date is the last.
