South Africa/Namibia Cooperation in Weather Services

The South African Weather Services (SAWS) has been providing Namibia with technical support and training of Namibian personnel in the field of meteorology. In response to complaints of the aviation industry in 2009 e.g. SAA, about the absence of terminal aerodrome forecasts over Namibia, SAWS worked closely with Namibian counterparts to identify and correct the problem and forecast data is now being accessed by all aviation users.

This is significant not only to the local users but to the region as a whole, particularly when considering the fact that the provision of aeronautical meteorological data over the African continent has always been a challenge.

The South African Weather Services and the Namibian Meteorological Services have developed an MOU on Cooperation in Meteorology to formalize relations and cooperation between the two national meteorological services. The agreement is technical and institutional in nature and the MOU was signed by Ministers Molewa during the Namibia State Visit on 7 November 2012.

Minister Edna Molewa, SA High Commissioner to India, HE Harris Majeke and DDG Fundisile Mketeni engages with Brazil, and India in a trilateral at the COP 11.
