Minister D George (Dr.): Publishes intention to adopt Generic Environmental Management Programme for the Kruger National Park as an environmental instrument for the purpose of excluding identified activities.
03 October 2024
The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, has given notice of his intention to adopt the Generic Environmental Management Programme for the Kruger National Park 2024, Revision 1, in terms of section 24(2)(e) of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No.107 of 1998), to exclude the South African National Parks (SANParks) from the requirement to obtain environmental authorisation for identified activities set out in the Schedule in the Government Gazette No. 51307, Notice No. 5234.
The Generic EMP stipulates measures to avoid, manage and mitigate the environmental impacts and risks associated with the implementation of certain activities. It will also assist in simplifying the implementation of maintenance, upgrading, expansion and new developments within the Kruger National Park.
The adoption of the GEMpr as an environmental management instrument and the exclusion of identified activities has been considered to facilitate and simplify the implementation of maintenance, upgrading, expansion and new developments within Kruger National Park.
The exclusion of these projects and the identified activities associate with them, will speed up implementation and ease the cost of doing business. The exclusion does not exclude SANParks from complying with any other applicable and relevant legislation when undertaking projects within the Kruger National Park.
Members of the public are invited to submit written comments and inputs within 30 days from the date of publication of this Notice in the Government Gazette, published on 27 September 2024.
