Media invited to attend stakeholder meeting on South Africa’s negotiating mandate related to the adoption of a plastics treaty by the UN Environment Assembly
16 February 2022
The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Ms Barbara Creecy, will on 17 February 2022, host a virtual stakeholder engagement ahead of the 5th session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 5.2) on 17 February 2022.
The Minister will outline the South African’s government’s negotiating mandate on the proposed Global Plastics Treaty to be tabled at UNEA 5.2 scheduled to take place in Nairobi, Kenya, from 28 February – 2 March 2022.
South Africa’s negotiating position, which is in support of addressing the issue of marine litter and plastic pollution in line with the position proposed by the African continent, was adopted by Cabinet last week.
South Africa supports the proposal to mandate the Executive Director of UNEP to establish an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) under UNEA to negotiate an internationally legally binding instrument on plastic pollution given the environmental challenges faced as a consequence of plastic pollution.
The high-level segment of UNEA 5.2 will take place on 2 March 2022 under the overarching theme “Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals”.
Media are invited to attend the virtual session.
