ENVIRONMENTAL RISK ASSESSMENT FOR AN APPLICATION FOR A RIGHT TO ENGAGE IN AN ABALONE RANCHING PILOT PROJECT | APPLICANT: MC RANCHING (PTY) LTD

MC Ranching (Pty) Ltd. (DBA) is applying to undertake ranching of abalone Haliotis midae along an ~4.5 km stretch of coast located 17 km north-west of Strandfontein in the Western Cape. A supply of Haliotis midae spat has been secured from DBA and HIK Abalone Farm (Pty) Ltd to be used for seeding their proposed ranching area.

MCR have applied for a concession to establish an abalone ranching pilot project North-West of Doring Bay extending from a point south of MSR Tormin mine (31°35'20.00"S, 18°6'49.00"E), to a point 17 km North-West of Strandfontein (31°37'25.00"S; 18°7'50.00"E) (Figure 3.1). The area selected does not fall within one of the abalone ranching concessions for the Western Cape as published in Government Notice No.729 of Government Gazette 33470 dated 20 August 2010, however with their extensive knowledge on Abalone farming and Abalone ranching MCR believe the area to be ideal for ranching. MCR have applied for Phase 1 of this application process and would like to proceed to Phase 2 of the application process which requires ministerial approval. This Environmental and Risk Assessment will form part of that submission.

MCR's proposal for the establishment of the pilot abalone ranching operation is set to start as soon as the application process has been finalised, assuming they are successful in this process. MCR have a supply agreement with DBA and HIK Abalone Farm (Pty) Ltd for the supply of spat as required. Each batch of spat to be seeded will have a valid Health Certificate issued by Amanzi Biosecurity.

PHAKISA ANNUAL REVIEWS

DFFE is the lead department for the oceans economy aquaculture focus area and its deliverables. The lab concluded that South Africa’s aquaculture sector has a high growth potential due to an increasing demand of fish products due to the increasing global population; increasing income by the middle class in developing countries and more awareness on the dietary benefits offered by fish products. Moreover, the capture fisheries yield has been plateauing over the past decade while aquaculture continues to grow over 7.5% per annum. This growth is expected to continue at a higher rate in the future.

There is nothing better than making tasty homemade recipes with locally sourced South African aquaculture produce. You are able to savour a delicious meal and support small, medium and micro enterprises at the same time. It has been a pleasure compiling this second version of the 'sensational seafood recipes using aquaculture produce'.

This recipe book shares seafood recipes and easy to prepare cooking ideas for marine and freshwater aquaculture produce from South Africa. Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic animals and plants, especially fish, shellfish and seaweed in natural or controlled marine or freshwater environments. In South Africa freshwater species include catfish, freshwater crayfish, trout and tilapia. Marine species include finfish, abalone, oysters and mussels.

This collection of recipes aims to help develop an appreciation for the nutritional value and unique taste of locally farmed fish and shellfish. Fish is one of the most nutritious foods containing high quality protein, essential fatty acids such as omega-3 and other nutrients. The following dishes are a collection supplied by current aquaculture farmers based all over the country. The South African aquaculture sector strives to implement best environmental practices, at the same time assuring consumers the safety and quality of its produce. We encourage readers to buy local produce which in turn helps sustain the South African economy and jobs in the aquaculture sector.
