2021 Fishing Rights Allocation Process: Public consultation meetings

The Department of Forestry Fisheries and the Environment will be conducting public consultation process session for the 2021/22 Fishing Rights Allocation Process (FRAP 2021) from Wednesday, 13 October 2021 to Thursday, 21 October 2021.

Officials from the departmental will engage with affected members of the fishing industry and interested parties (stakeholders) countrywide on the draft general policy, draft transfer policy, draft sector specific policies and applicable fee for guidance on the decisions for the final policies and fees.

The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Barbara Creecy published the Draft General Policy on the Allocation of Commercial Fishing Rights and the Proposed Fees Payable in Respect of Applications on 13 September 2021.

The draft policy has been translated into the three (3) dominant coastal languages, Afrikaans, isiXhosa and isiZulu and copies of the translated policies are available on the Department’s website on the links below:

Members of the public are invited to submit written comments on the draft policy to the Minister no later than 25 October 2021.

The FRAP 2021 process is committed to allocating resources in a sustainable manner for future generations while also attempting to balance the competing requirements of broadening access, particularly by marginalised groups and small medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs), balancing government’s priorities of transforming the sector but also ensuring the global competitiveness of South Africa’s fishing sector.

The Public consultation process sessions will be held physically nationwide and virtually as per the table below:
