UNDP/GEF 6: Bioprospecting Value Chains Project

Project Overview

The South African Government, through the National Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme-Country Office, are implementing the Global Environment Facility (GEF) 6 funded project, which is aligned to achieving the objectives of the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing, and the draft National Biodiversity Economy Strategy (NBES).

African Ginger Research and Development

Output 1.1 of the UNDP/GEF6 Project is implemented by the Council for Industrial Research (CSIR) and aims to overcome R&D barriers linked to clinical studies and registration of African Ginger (Siphonochilus aethiopicus) as a bioresource to treat inflammatory and allergic diseases in an ABS-compliant manner.

Northern Cape Bioprospecting Research & Development Hub

Output 1.2 of the UNDP/GEF6 Project, is being implemented by the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), which aims to support Bioprospecting R&D in the Northern Cape, by boosting the local Bioprospecting economy through establishing a strategically located ‘Bioproducts R&D Hub’

Pelargonium Sidoides Biodiversity Management Plan

Output 2.1 of the UNDP/GEF6 Project, is implemented by TRAFFIC Conservation South Africa, which aims to support the review and implementation of the Pelargonium Biodiversity Management Plan (BMP) in close collaboration between the Pelargonium Working Group, community businesses and CSO stakeholders.

Aloe Ferox Harvesting, Processing And Trading Hub

Output 2.2 of the UNDP/GEF6 Project, implemented by DFFE, aims to develop an Aloe ferox harvesting, processing and trading hub in the Eastern Cape for promoting sustainable and equitable benefit sharing across the value chain.

Honeybush Small Grant Fund

Output 2.2 of the UNDP/GEF6 Project, implemented by the DFFE, aims to support community-based enterprises in Honeybush farming, ensuring conservation and equitable benefit sharing outcomes across the Cyclopia spp. landscape in the Cape Region.

Rooibos ABS Strengthening

Output 2.4 of the UNDP/GEF6 Project, implemented by DFFE, aims to strengthen ABS implementation in Rooibos farming, ensuring fairness, equity and sustainability in relevant relationships among TK holders and industry.

National Registration System

Output 3.1 of the UNDP/GEF6 Project, implemented by DSI, aims to Support the National Registration System for TK linked to bioprospecting for ensuring ABS compliance in current and future agreements between indigenous and traditional knowledge holders and industry.

National Biotrade Standard And Certification

Output 3.2 of the UNDP/GEF6 Project, implemented by the DFFE with technical partnership with SANBI, aims to develop a national biotrade standard certification system for South Africa with a view to safeguarding biodiversity conservation within bioprospecting value chains.

Project Risk Management

The Project implements a comprehensive risk identification and management plan to maximize social and environmental opportunities and benefits as well as ensure that adverse social and environmental risks and impacts are avoided, minimized and managed.
