GLOBAL GIANTS, GREEN PLEDGES AT G20

Held in Kruger National Park on 13 -17 July, the gathering brought together delegates from government, industry, academia, and civil society to address pressing global challenges and explore opportunities for shared progress. As the first African nation to lead the G20, South Africa set the tone for a year of bold, inclusive dialogue under the theme "Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability."

CLIMATE PLAN TO BOLSTER RESILIENT ECONOMY

“Having a robust Climate Change Coastal Adaptation Response Plan is essential to supporting South Africa’s Operation Phakisa efforts to achieve a sustainable oceans economy.” These were the sentiments expressed by Minister D George (Dr). The Minister was speaking during the launch of the Climate Change Coastal Adaptation Response Plan (CARP).

In response to the rapid challenges of e-waste in the country, Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts developed an e-waste collection pilot project to mobilise South African communities to buy into recycling and the proper disposal of e-waste. Hosted in Mpumalanga’s biggest municipality, Bushbuckridge at the beginning of February.

At COP29, parties came together to adopt the Baku Climate Unity Pact, a comprehensive agreement that includes a New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) for climate finance, a Global Goal on Adaptation, and the Sharm el-Sheikh Mitigation Ambition and Implementation Work Programme.

BUILDING SOUTH AFRICA'S SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES

The small-scale fisheries sector in South Africa has undergone a detailed revamp, which has included stricter legal procedures, registration, and the establishment of cooperative organisations. It is noteworthy that 172 small-scale fishing cooperatives have been granted 15-year fishing rights, indicating a substantial step forward in the growth of the sector.
