INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE SEAFARER
25 JUNE
SEAFARERS - ESSENTIAL COMPONENT IN WORLD TRADE.
The role of seafarers often goes under appreciated within the maritime industry and by the general public. Seafarers are an essential component in world trade, keeping the economy moving and delivering the goods and fuels we use. On June 25th every year, the IMO celebrates the “Day of the Seafarer“. The International Day of the Seafarer provides an opportunity to pay tribute to the world’s 1.5 million seafarers for the unique and all-too-often overlooked contribution to the well-being of the general public. Leading up to the 25 June, seafarers are being invited to answer questions on what a fair future for seafarers looks like.
MARINE PROTECTED AREAS DAY
01 AUGUST
MPA DAY - A WAY TO EDUCATE AND INSPIRE OTHERS ABOUT THE PROPER MANAGEMENT OF PROTECTED SPACES AND TO DRAW ATTENTION TO BENEFITS MPAs PROVIDE.
Marine Protected Areas Day (MPA Day), held every year on 1 August, is a global event dedicated to raising awareness about marine protected areas (MPAs) and their essential role in ocean conservation, sustainable development, and community well-being. First launched in 2021 by South African organisations, MPA Day was created to spotlight a key gap in global environmental observances - none focused specifically on MPAs. The date marks the historic proclamation of 20 new or expanded MPAs in South Africa on 1 August 2019, a major milestone in marine protection. Since then, MPA Day has become an international movement, endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade and embraced by people and organisations around the world.
INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEAN-UP DAY
3rd SATURDAY of SEPTEMBER
LEADING AND INSPIRING ACTION IN SUPPORT OF OUR OCEAN
Annually, on the third Saturday of September, volunteers around the world take part in the world’s biggest coastal clean-up – the International Coastal Clean-up Day (ICCD). The event has been held internationally each year since 1986, when people head to the beaches and begin removing debris and rubbish from shorelines, waterways, and the oceans. The ICC initiative worldwide remains the largest volunteer environmental data-gathering effort and clean-up event of coastal and underwater areas to date.
