Oceans Economy master plan integrated consultations

The Department of Forestry Fisheries and the Environment will be conducting Integrated Consultations for Small Scale Fishers and Coastal Communities across twenty-nine (29) localities within the 4 coastal provinces in the country, from Tuesday, 2 August 2022.

During the consultations, small-scale fishers, coastal communities, and related stakeholders, will be given an opportunity to make their inputs in respect of the Ocean Economy Master Plan (OEMP) and capture those for inclusion in the OEMP Implementation Plan

They will also be given an opportunity to examine and determine specific interventions that could be undertaken or supported to enhance the economic development of small-scale fishers, their coastal communities, and related stakeholders, especially cooperatives and sustainable livelihoods.

The consultation process will be held simultaneously with other DFFE policy initiatives that also need to consult small-scale fishers, coastal communities, and related broader stakeholders. These DFFE initiatives include:

  • Development of the implementation plan for OEMP;
  • Consultations on the developed Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) sector plans and;
  • Marine Protected Areas (MPA) issues that relate very closely to small-scale fishers and aquaculture, and vice versa. This directly involves the Branch: Fisheries’ offerings in the form of small-scale fisheries and aquaculture (marine and freshwater).
